Weird Mormons in Utah

Forgive me if this sounds angry. I'm not mad, just frustrated.

I don't understand why some Mormons are fanatics. They will put every church activity before their families, life and even God. Some members will spend so much time on a lesson, an activity, a handout, etc, that they will almost drive themselves crazy! They will take away time that they could spend with the people they love, but instead, go crazy and spend time on things that people will probably throw away anyway.

I have a friend who just recently moved here from West Virginia. He is not a member of the LDS church. He is interested and pretty much agrees with all of the doctrine. The only reason why he hasn't joined the church, is because he's just not ready. Cool. Awesome. Whatever.

He moved into a BYU approved housing complex. He told his roommates that he is interested in the church, but not a member. The first few days and weeks his roommates genuinely had an interest in him as a son of God and a prospective member. After they found out, however, that he smokes and sometimes drinks, they began to treat him differently. Just because he does not uphold some of the things that we members believe to be wrong, they have shunned him and do not care about his eternal salvation. This is just a small example.

I don't think that the church is like this all around the world. I do believe that there are wards and congregations that have reached an awesome level of acceptance. The question remains, "WHY ARE MORMONS IN UTAH SO FREAKING WEIRD?"

They take the church to be the highest priority in their lives. They make themselves better than those who are lower than them. I believe that members who like that are self-righteous and definitely not Christ-like. They are stupid and lame. I don't really like them.

I have a roommate that when I said I was hopeful of the furture with President Barack Obama, thought for a moment and then proceeded to tell me how bad the world will be when he is president. Stupid and lame. Just because someone is a democrat and wants to change somethings in the USA, doesn't mean that the downfall of all humanity will occur.

All I am trying to say is, "All you members who take the church too seriously...get down off your high horse and be Christ-like". Christ was the perfect example. He never judged anyone. He loved everyone. He wanted to help everyone. If we could all just remember that God is love and we WANT TO BE LIKE JESUS, the church wouldn't be that bad...in a sense. If we could follow the examples of our Christian, Baptist, Evangelical brothers and sisters, we would have more members. What's their secret? Acceptance of everyone and geuine love towards their fellowman. Being a member of the LDS church does not grant you ANY RIGHT to discriminate against someone because of their sins, or their habits, anything like that. Membership in the church can grant you eternal life, if you live your life like the Savior.

If we could all just be simply more like Jesus, the world would be a better place. Especially Utah.

hey cous! excited to see you have a blog (and that you are already blogging so...freely). all the rest of us just blog about pregnancy and babies - it's fun to read a "real" blog.

I think Utah Mormons are weird because we live in Mormon Utopia and most of us have very little experience with the outside world. Those that don't live in Utopia, or have lived out-of-state see all the "accessories" just like you and me - mostly a waste of time. That doesn't mean they are bad, just focusing too much on things that really don't make any difference.

On a side note: we are so looking forward to Obama taking office in January, some days I can hardly wait.

Stop by and "see" us anytime!

Andy, I agree...

And welcome to Utah. I'm glad you got back safe from your mission ... and since you're wondering who in the world I am, let's just say you know my better by a different pseudonym...Brett Radcliffe.

Anyway. Best wishes!
